With gas prices being so high it’s amazing it hasn’t become a major issue in this year’s election. The fluctuating gas prices have been a major issue for Ontarians for decades with many Canadians calling for regulation in the oil industry.
In recent months the average gas price has skyrocketed. The H.S.T. certainly hasn’t helped things in Ontario, given that it increased fuel costs across the board by 8%. Fuel costs affect the cost of everything. Immediately in the grocery stores I am hearing murmurs about the rising cost of everything it seems – hydro, gas, food and more.
On a recent Yahoo Poll, the rising gas prices were found to be the top financial issue in this election according to at least 63% of respondents. What’s interesting is that the N.D.P seems to be the only party making note of the issue of the H.S.T. Which is a large fueller for the rise in cost of gas, utilities, insurance and more.
While this article is meant to discuss the cost of gas, not politics – the two go hand in hand. The cost of the average gas price we pay at the pump, is largely comprised of tax. It also seems that “speculation” is what seems to cause the jumps in gas prices, so you would think that at least one candidate would include something to deal with this issue in their platform.
The bottom line is while the politicians seem to have minimized the impact of H.S.T. on everyday working families – Ontarians are suffering. In a recent poll 30% of respondents polled in Ontario it indicated that the cost of living is so high that it is impossible to save money.
Where does that leave you? It leaves you having to find room in your budget to try to accommodate the spike in some living expenses. I hate to say it but you may have to carpool for a while and skip going out some weekends until this spike in gas prices subsides (if it does).
If it doesn’t, I think we will all have to start giving consideration to that Chevy Volt =)
